Development of a Chick

This is a chick approximately 16 hours after fertilization. At this point, you can see the developing notochord running left to right through the center of the embryo, and see limb buds beginning to form at the top and bottomof the picture.

This picture was taken after about 2 days of development. The tail is clearly visible to the left, and the head to the right. You can begin to discern some of the internal organs if you look carefully at this stage.

This embryo is about 7 days old. The eye (the large brown circle on the right) is developing rapidly. You can also make out blood vessels and some internal organs.

At 10 days of development, the chick is beginning to look very birdlike. Note that you can see the eyes, the beak, and even the structure of the feet. The "hand bones" in the wings have the appearance of hands; in this photo you can almost see all of the "fingers"

Fifteen days after fertilization, feathers and claws are developing. The beak is also very recognizable.

This 21-day embryo is almost ready to leave the egg. It is completely covered with feathers, and its internal and external organs are almost completely developed.
