Karyotyping Activity from The Biology Project

This exercise is a simulation of human karyotyping using digital images of chromosomes from actual human genetic studies. You will be arranging chromosomes into a completed karyotype, and interpreting your findings just as if you were working in a genetic analysis program at a hospital or clinic. Karyotype analyses are performed over 400,000 times per year in the U.S. and Canada. Imagine that you were performing these analyses for real people, and that your conclusions would drastically effect their lives.

What Can Our Chromosomes Tell Us?  Looking at Karyotypes

Klinefelter Syndrome Web Site

On this site, you will find information about Klinefelter Syndrome, when it was first discovered, the common characteristics, and treatment. In the near future, there will also be information about other sex chromosome variations, such as XXX in females. We also provide information on current research projects into Klinefelter Syndrome, and other resources which may be of help such as a list of links on the internet.

Turner Syndrome from the National Institutes of Health

Turner syndrome affects approximately 1 out of every 2,500 female live births worldwide. It embraces a broad spectrum of features, from major heart defects to minor cosmetic issues. Some individuals with Turner syndrome may have only a few features, while others may have many. Almost all people with Turner syndrome have short stature and loss of ovarian function, but the severity of these problems varies considerably amongst individuals.

National Down Syndrome Society

People with Down syndrome have an extra, critical portion of the number 21 chromosome present in all, or some, of their cells. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with the syndrome.
